When I was holding my daughter and she stopped breathing, our pastor ushered everyone out of the room, but he stopped at the door and came back to say a quick prayer. I don't remember most of what he said, but very vividly I can hear him start the prayer by saying, "Jesus, give us a hope."
And because of Jesus, we do have that hope amidst all the brokenness around us. Obviously, we have not been promised a life without suffering. We have bigger and better promises than that. God has promised us redemption and eternal life as His adopted children -- not because of anything we have done, but because of Jesus's death and resurrection. He has also promised that He loves us and cares for us, even when he allows us to suffer. These promises are steadfast, no matter our feelings, no matter our circumstances.
All these things are true. But we have to remind ourselves of them often, and especially on February 15, because our hearts still ache for our precious girl.
